The Pot
|
It was back in 1938 that
Dr.Wilhelm Konig, an Austrian archaeologist, made his now famous discovery
in the baghdad Museum:a 6-inch high pot of clay dating back to 250 BCE.
It contained a cylinder of sheet-copper 5 inches by 1.5 inches, with the
edge of the cylinder soldered with a lead-tin alloy. The bottom of the cylinder
was capped with a crimped copper disk and sealed. Another layer of sealant
on the top help in place an iron rod suspended into the center of the cylinder.
Because the rod showed evidence of having been corroded with an acidic agent,
Dr. Konig believed his discovery to be an ancient electric battery. Using
crushed grapes as electrolyte, the cell generated 0.87V. Several cells,
in serial arrangement, were suffient for the electroplating of small objects.
It also turned out that statuettes could be electroplated with this battery
system to appear as if they were solid golf, a discovery that sent many
museums curators into a fenzy to check their supposedly solid gold items.
